Project area: Biomaterial Microsystems
Project description:
Main-supervisors: Ritika Singh Petersen (risi@nanotech.dtu.dk), Stephan Keller
Ever had a problem of swallowing a big tablet or capsule? And on top of it knowing that most of that BIG tablet is degraded and wasted in your system? And not to forget the long list of side effects they have. Our group is developing smart pills that can tackle all these problems of conventional tablets and capsules. We are fabricating these smart pills using hot punching: a technique recently patented by the group. We are looking for enthusiastic students who can dig deeper in this technique and bring it closer to commercialization. Who knows tomorrow their effort could lead to a big leap towards next-generation drug delivery systems?
Here are some of the goals of the project:
Microcontainer fabrication:
- Dissolving drug in a solution
- Spin coating drug solution
- Fabrication of microcontainers by using new hot punching technique.
- Final tuning of the process to improve yield per wafer.
Loading of drug:
- Dissolving drug in a solution
- Spin coating drug solution
- Hot punching performed to fill the microcontainers with drug matrix.
Covering microcontainers with smart lid:
- Fabrication of shadow mask using picosecond laser in Danchip
- Spray coating with ultrasonic atomizer nozzle
Characterization and drug release measurements:
- Measuring drug released from the microcontainers by dissolution studies
- SEM imaging and optical profilometry in Danchip
Advantages of the project:
- It can be tuned according to the aspirations and requirements of the student
- Opportunity to work on cutting edge technology that has been patented last year and a project that just received 56 million funding
- Opportunity to apply for Novo scholarship
- Opportunity to work with a big and diverse group
